Filipino women are mostly beauty conscious and would always want to look good to feel good. Many had been using different brands of beauty cream and other beauty products to enhance their beauty and improve their appearance to achieve a ‘whiter’, fairer complexion in particular. In some reports, Filipinos were even tagged as the no.1 consumers on whitening products all over the world.
Funny as it seems, while Filipinos found having whiter complexion more pleasing to their eyes, foreigners were wondering as they thought of Filipina skin as nice and ‘perfect’.
In a news made by SUN HK, the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Hong Kong had warned Filipinos about buying a facial cream named Zi Xin Mei Spots Removing Night Cream which allegedly contains an excessive amount of mercury which is hazardous to one’s health.
The warning came along with a statement released by the Centre for Health Protection of Hong Kong’s Department of Health involving a 30-year-old female patient who had experienced mercury poisoning from the Hospital Authority.
“Chronic exposure to mercury can cause damage to the nervous system and kidneys. Symptoms may include tremors, irritability, insomnia, deterioration of memory, difficulty in concentration, impaired hearing and vision, and change in the taste function. In severe cases, renal failure may occur.”
Apparently, the patient with good health record in the past had developed swelling of lower limbs since November. According to the patient, she had been using Zi Xin Mei cream for two months before the symptoms appeared. Her laboratory test results then revealed that her urine contains level 14 of mercury which was 280 times the normal level.
An investigation was immediately conducted and the case has been referred to the corresponding law enforcement agency to look after her case since they were clinically suspecting that the sudden increase of the mercury level in the patient was related to the use of the cream.
Meanwhile, a spokesman confirmed that the mercury content of the Zi Xin Mei cream had exceeded the acceptable level. Thus, its use may result in serious side-effects.
He then also reminded the public not to patronize cosmetic products with unknown composition and ingredients especially if coming from fictitious sources for fear that they may bring health hazards.
